KIMOCHI INCORPORATEDDonations to Kimochi are Tax Deductible.
Kimochi, the organization, is a fusion of ideas and philosophies born of a joint American Indian and Asian American effort on the campus of the University of Colorado, Boulder. Kimochi, Incorporated was established in the spring of 1972 as an alliance between American Indians and Asian Americans at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado, USA. Since that time, the organization has evolved into an entity with a broad scope of projects and services.
The name, Kimochi, is a Japanese word that reflects the meaning of "a feeling of good will." While the organization's founding concept emphasized American Indian and Asian American educational issues and concerns, the group has since evolved into a comprehensive entity with a much broader scope of human relations and services.
During its existence, Kimochi has operated under a variety of conditions depending on its funding and staffing levels. Because of its lean structure and low profile, Kimochi has developed a unique style and personal approach that has allowed the organization a greater number and variety of activities than larger organizations that expend energies on maintaining basic administrative structures. Within this purview, Kimochi seeks undertakings generally overlooked and/or avoided by other organizations. Kimochi's services have included conceptualization and implementation of projects, and "simple" levels of technical assistance.
The majority of this organizational activity has been funded through the individual efforts of volunteers and the membership of Kimochi, but at times, Kimochi's program activity has been supported by traditional funding agencies, such as The Coors Foundation and Kinematic of New York City. Kimochi also owes much to those generous private contributors to such programs as its Christmas Project.
Current programs of Kimochi are:
The Traditional Medicine Support Committee. This program is an ongoing attempt to generate monetary and other support for traditional Indian medicine men and women. Current funding is provided by private sources.
The Christmas Project. Kimochi, in cooperation with other organizations in Los Angeles and Denver, gathers Christmas presents for Indian children on the Reservations. Christmas dinners are also sponsored by this program. This ongoing project is supported by donations and private funding.
The Kimochi Tibetan Resettlement Program The central purpose of this program is to help in the resettlement of Tibetan refugees in the Los Angeles area. This long term project is supported by volunteers and private funding.
A few of the projects that Kimochi has successfully initiated are:
The Native American Business Development Initiative. This was a new and unique American Indian business development effort that integrates a for-profit woodworking and bronze casting production and marketing enterprise with a technical assistance and training program. Funding was provided by Kinematic of New York City.
The Moqui Project. This was an agricultural assistance project on the Hopi Reservation. Funding was provided by private sources and volunteers.
The Shiprock Farming Support Project. This was a cooperative project with SCI-International Voluntary Service, an international volunteer organization, to rehabilitate old irrigation canals on the Navaho Reservation and stimulate farming capabilities. This project grew to include development of biodynamic gardens in other areas of the Navaho Reservation.
International Volunteer Programs. Kimochi, in cooperation with SCI-International Voluntary Service, developed several Summer volunteer service programs in Canada and the United States. These volunteer programs assisted Indian elders, single parents and medicine people. Funding was provided by The Coors Foundation, donations, private sources and the volunteers.
Mt. Shasta. This program is to help save the sacred areas found on Mt. Shasta, located in northern California. This long term project is supported by volunteers and private funding.
Kimochi Music and Publications. This program is to assist the development of American Indian music. This new program is supported by the efforts of volunteers.
Future programs are concerned with the development of tours of American Indian archeological and cultural sites for the summer of 1996. Efforts are also being made to revive the International Volunteer Program.
Kimochi, Inc. is an established nonprofit and tax-exempt human relations and service group that has, since its inception in 1972, conducted its business in good standing under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
